In Art [&&] Impact, you’ll work in teams to design and build an interactive art installation that expresses a strong artistic statement. The course is split into 3 phases:

1. ARTISTIC STATEMENT 2. UX TRIALS 3. STAGING

Each phase builds upon the last. You’ll begin by crafting a strong artistic statement, then explore how to express it through experience-focused trials, and finally bring your concept to life in a public exhibition.

Course Work

You will work in groups of 6 students to form a creative collective with the goal of creating an art installation. Groups will be assigned by the course lecturers in the first week of the course, based on your study location. This means you will be placed into VU-only or UT-only teams by default. You can also indicate one name of a student with whom you do not want to be in a team (via a survey on Canvas).

However, you can opt into the Cross-Country Challenge (CCC). In this case, you and two peers (a group of 3) can register together and be matched with a team of 3 students from the other university, forming a VU-UT hybrid team. More on this in a bit.

Your group will collaboratively define an artistic statement that expresses a clear conceptual position. This statement should be both personal and critical, rooted in exploration of the course theme (”Persona”) and your assigned technology.

The aim is not to explain something, but to evoke, provoke, or challenge an audience through interactive artistic expression.

More information about the individual phases is published on the main page. Each phase has its own schedule, deliverables, and evaluation criteria.

In terms of workload, the AAAI course is a 5 EC course, which means that roughly 140 hours of work are expected to complete it successfully. The graph below should give an indication how much time you are expected to spend over the 11 weeks
